California officers face corruption charges

Wednesday March 12, 2003

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Several California law enforcement officers have been indicted on corruption charges following a lengthy undercover investigation, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

The officers, from jurisdictions across Southern California, allegedly accepted bribes from drug traffickers in exchange for confidential information and protection from prosecution. The investigation, which spanned more than two years, involved state and federal authorities working jointly.

“Police corruption of this kind undermines public trust and puts communities at risk,” said the lead federal prosecutor. “We will not tolerate officers who betray their oath.”

The charges include conspiracy, bribery, and obstruction of justice. If convicted, the officers face up to 20 years in federal prison.

The officers were placed on administrative leave pending trial. Their attorneys said the charges were baseless and promised a vigorous defense.
