SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) Kicker Mackenzie Hoambrecker
helped Northern Iowa overcome a 20-10 deficit in the fourth quarter
to beat Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo 29-26 in overtime Saturday.
Hoambrecker outlasted Cal Poly kicker Navid Niakan with three
overtime field goals and a game-tying 57-yarder with 14 seconds
remaining in regulation.
Hoambrecker's school-record 47-yarder tied the game 20-20 at
Mustang Stadium and set the stage for a thrilling kicking
exhibition in overtime.
The kickers each nailed field goals in the first and second
overtimes, but Niakan missed a 39-yard attempt. Hoambrecker won it
with a 34-yarder.
The Mustangs took the lead in the second quarter on a 41-yard
field goal by Niakan and pushed the lead to 20-10 on a one-yard
dive by backup quarterback Chris Cooper.
Northern Iowa (3-1)mounted the late comeback behind running back
Jim Lizzi's two-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Adam
Benge added a seven-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
Panther quarterback Griff Jurgens threw for 233 yards on 20-of-39
passing.
Cal Poly (0-5) is of to its worst start in 38 seasons.
