Sunday March 30, 2003
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) The Anaheim Angels got their roster down
to the 25-man limit, sending four position players and three
pitchers to the minors Saturday night.
After closing the exhibition season with a 6-5 loss to Los
Angeles, the World Series champs optioned infielders Alfredo
Amezaga and Chone Figgins, catcher Wil Nieves, outfielder Jeff
DaVanon and left-hander Mark Lukasiewicz to Triple-A Salt Lake.
They also reassigned lefty Rich Rodriguez and righty Doug Nickle to
Triple-A.
Right-hander Matt Wise, who had surgery to repair a torn
ligament in his elbow, was transferred to the 60-day disabled list
from the 15-day disabled list to make room for outfielder Julio
Ramirez. The Angels purchased Ramirez's contract from Salt Lake.
The Angels are starting the season with 11 pitchers, three
catchers, six infielders and five outfielders.
