Beavers 1, Grizzlies 0
Wednesday April 09, 2003
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) Portland starter Ben Howard pitched seven
shutout innings to lead the Beavers to a 1-0 victory over the
Fresno Grizzlies in a Pacific Coast League game Tuesday.
Howard (1-1) gave up just one hit and struck out two.
For the first five innings, Grizzlies starter Jerome Williams
(1-1) matched Howard's shutout performance, allowing two hits and
striking out four.
But in the sixth inning, Williams allowed three consecutive
singles and when Jason Bay's hit sent Kory De Haan home, the
Beavers had the only run they'd need.
Despite the Grizzlies' attempt at a ninth-inning rally, the
Beavers held on to win.
The Grizzlies loaded the bases, but Todd Linden grounded out to
end the rally and the game.
