Clark improving after motorcycle crash

Monday March 31, 2003

PHOENIX (AP) Los Angeles Dodgers batting coach Jack Clark remained in stable condition at a Phoenix hospital Monday, a day after he was injured in a motorcycle accident.

``He's improving. He sat up and ate. They're trying to figure out when he should start to walk, which is a good sign. He's more alert,'' Dodgers spokesman John Olguin said.

Clark broke eight ribs and had cuts to his head when he was clipped by a car on his way to Bank One Ballpark for a Dodgers workout on Sunday. He initially was listed in critical condition.

It was not known how long Clark would remain hospitalized.

Clark told team officials that he was traveling in the left lane of the freeway near downtown Phoenix and was about to exit when two vehicles collided, and one of them clipped his motorcycle.

``We were troubled by his appearance and evident discomfort and pain,'' Dodgers vice president Derrick Hall said.

Police said a minivan made an unsafe lane change and hit a car, which collided with Clark's motorcycle. The minivan driver was cited for an unsafe lane change, the Department of Public Safety said.

Clark was not wearing a helmet none is required in Arizona.
