Giants 6, Padres 2
Monday July 28, 2003
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Jesse Foppert learned a lot from his short
trip to the minors.
Andres Galarraga drove in four runs to back Foppert as the San
Francisco Giants beat the Padres 6-2 on Sunday for their 10th win
in 11 games.
Foppert (7-8) won for the third time in four starts, allowing
two runs one earned and six hits in 6 2-3 innings. He struck
out seven and walked two.
He was sent to the minors July 10 after a stretch in which he
went 1-3 with a 9.82 ERA over five starts. He made one appearance,
allowing three runs on five hits in three innings, before his
recall to start against the Colorado Rockies on July 20, an 8-4
win.
``It was disappointing, but understandable,'' Foppert said. ``I
was thinking too much. It was there, but I just couldn't find it.
They left me alone and let me work out of it.''
The results have been impressive.
``Pretty good back-to-back,'' Giants manager Felipe Alou said.
``He was good today, better than the other day. We're getting some
good pitching right now.''
The Giants' rotation has 46 games this year, the most among
starting pitchers in the NL.
Galarraga hit behind Barry Bonds, who walked twice, including
once intentionally. Galarraga has 120 RBIs against the Padres, his
third-highest total, trailing Philadelphia (122) and Pittsburgh
(121).
Bonds went 2-for-4 with four walks in his two games against the
Padres. He has 73 career homers and 188 RBIs against San Diego, his
most against any team.
Pedro Feliz also homered for the Giants.
Jake Peavy (8-8) gave up six runs and eight hits in six innings,
and struck out seven. He has lost three consecutive decisions after
winning a career-best four in a row.
``He's going through a bit of a difficult time,'' Bochy said.
``He got behind a little bit too much but he's got good stuff.''
Ryan Klesko and Mark Loretta drove in runs for the Padres, who
lost for the third time in four games.<
