Padres activate Jarvis from DL, recall Perez
Friday June 13, 2003
CHICAGO (AP) The San Diego Padres activated right-hander Kevin
Jarvis from the 60-day disabled list and recalled left-hander
Oliver Perez from Triple-A Portland on Friday.
Jarvis made his first start of the season Friday night against
the Chicago White Sox.
He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow on July 9,
2002. In three rehab starts for Single-A Lake Elsinore, he went 2-1
with a 4.09 ERA. Jarvis is 29-38 with 5.83 ERA in 148 career games.
Perez is slated to start on Sunday in the series finale. He was
3-3 for Portland with a 3.02 ERA. With the Padres, Perez is 1-3
with a 8.23 ERA this season.
``He (Perez) was throwing better down there and Kevin Towers our
general manager saw him and thought he was more consistent and was
ready to come back up,'' Padres manager Bruce Bochy said.
To make room on the roster, the Padres sent right-handers
Carlton Loewer and Brian Tollberg to Portland.
Loewer was 1-2 with a 6.65 ERA with the Padres, and Tollberg was
0-2 with a 6.97 ERA.
