Franklin sharp in spring training finale
Sunday March 30, 2003
Just hours before the regular season began Sunday, the Seattle
Mariners and San Francisco Giants wrapped up the spring training
schedule.
Ryan Franklin pitched four solid innings in Seattle's 3-1
victory over the Giants in San Francisco. He and five relievers
combined on an eight-hitter.
``I gained a lot of confidence today in using my curve,''
Franklin said. ``My game is pitching for contact. A curve gives me
another pitch to use as a way to keep opponents off balance.''
Franklin walked two and struck out one. The right-hander is
scheduled to make his first start of the regular season April 4 in
Texas.
Marquis Grissom homered for San Francisco. Giants prospect Jesse
Foppert gave up two runs one earned in five innings. He struck
out five and took the loss.
``He pitches like he's been up in the majors for 10 years,''
manager Felipe Alou said.
Mike Cameron hit an RBI single and scored for the Mariners. John
Mabry added an RBI triple.
Right-hander Giovanni Carrara, signed Friday, made his first
appearance for the Mariners and pitched a scoreless inning.
