Steve Mariucci's son signs with Cal Poly-SLO

Wednesday February 05, 2003

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) The son of Steve Mariucci signed a national letter of intent to attend Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo on Wednesday the same day his father was introduced as the new coach of the Detroit Lions.

Tyler Mariucci is a 6-foot-0, 180-pounder who played quarterback and defensive back at Valley Christian High in San Jose, Calif. He completed 65 of 105 passes for 1,107 yards and 13 touchdowns with just three interceptions and rushed for 350 yards and seven TDs last season.

Steve Mariucci signed a five-year contract reportedly worth $25 million with the Lions. He was fired as coach of the San Francisco 49ers last month after six years on the job. His San Francisco teams had a 60-43 record and qualified for the playoffs four times.
