Tuesday June 03, 2003
RENO, Nev. (AP) Four university of Nevada players were
selected in the Major League Baseball draft Tuesday, including
senior third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and junior pitcher Mateo
Miramontes.
Kouzmanoff, the Western Athletic Conference's Player of the
Year, and Miramontes, a right-handed starter, were back-to-back
picks in the sixth round.
The Cleveland Indians drafted Kouzmanoff as the 168th pick
overall and the New York Mets made Miramontes the 169th selection.
The Boston Red Sox picked senior Nevada relief pitcher Zak Basch
in the 13th round and junior center fielder Chris Dickerson was
drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 16th round.
Kouzmanoff of Evergreen, Colo., led the WAC this season in home
runs (17), RBIs (67) and total bases (147). The 17 home runs tied
for the third best single season in school history and the 67 RBI
tied for the eighth best single season at Nevada.
Miramontes of Danville, Calif., posted a 9-5 record with a 4.97
ERA and 79 strikeouts this past season. He earned second team
all-WAC honors in 2002 and was a freshman All-America in 2001 after
posting a 10-3 record. In three seasons at Nevada, his record is
25-16 with a 5.15 ERA, 259 strikeouts, and 311.1 innings pitched.
The wins, strikeouts, and innings pitched all rank second in school
history.
