SoCal underwear bandit of the 1980s back in jail

Wednesday October 09, 2002

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. (AP) A 47-year-old man sent to prison in the 1980s for stealing women's underwear is back behind bars, this time for allegedly stealing personnel files.

Bruce Allen Lyons was arrested Friday and booked for investigation of burglarizing a medical building in Aliso Viejo, Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said Wednesday.

Investigators discovered that a woman who worked in the building had filed a stalking complaint against Lyons, Amormino said.

Confiscated from Lyons were credit cards, identification papers, and two cellular phones that had been reported stolen, Amormino said. He added that authorities were checking to see if they were connected to a string of armed robberies in Culver City, Los Angeles and Santa Monica.

In 1988, Lyons was convicted of 22 criminal counts for a series of crimes in which he threatened women and girls and forced them to remove their underwear, which he kept. He recently was released from prison after serving part of a 15-year sentence.
