Police identify body of 11-year-old boy found in river

Thursday June 19, 2003

THREE RIVERS, Calif. (AP) A body found in the Kaweah River has been identified as that of an 11-year-old boy who slipped into the icy Kaweah River during a Mother's Day outing in Sequoia National Park.

The body of Xavier Duarte was found Monday in the waters at Three Rivers, several miles outside the park boundary. Police released the identity Thursday.

The child was last seen May 11 being swept downstream as he tumbled over a 10-foot waterfall in the Kaweah River. The boy, who was in the park with his family, slipped as he was rock hopping.
