Teens to stand trial for alleged rape on UCLA campus

Wednesday June 18, 2003

LOS ANGELES (AP) Three high school students were ordered Wednesday to stand trial on charges they raped a student in a University of California, Los Angeles, dormitory during a tour of the campus.

A Superior Court judge found there was enough evidence to require Deshawn Stringer, 18, and Jamar Dawson and Chuwan Anthony, both 17, to stand trial. All three are free on bail and scheduled to return to court July 2.

They were charged as adults and face one count each of forcible rape, forcible rape in concert, forcible oral copulation, and forcible oral copulation in concert with force. Stringer is also charged with misdemeanor battery for allegedly attacking another dormitory resident that day.

All three have pleaded innocent.

Authorities said the teens, who were students at Carson High School, were touring the UCLA campus with several other students and a counselor last December when they left the group and attacked the student.

During a two-day preliminary hearing, a high school English teacher who arranged the visit said she told the students they could not go into the dorms.
