Wednesday April 16, 2003

SACRAMENTO (AP) With the filing deadline hours away, Gov. Gray Davis released tax returns showing he and his wife paid $50,121 in federal and state taxes on an adjusted gross income of $185,357. The couple earned $193,155 last year.

Most of the family income came from the governor's salary of $157,731, according to the couple's returns released Tuesday. His wife, Sharon Davis, reported earning $33,224 as a director on a number of corporate boards, including Golden State Foods, an Irvine-based food distributor.

The state's first couple took $34,277 in itemized deductions, most of it from state and local taxes as well as interest on their Los Angeles condominium.

Charitable contributions included $4,090 to the Church of the Good Shepherd in Los Angeles as well as donations of $500 or less to the AIDS Project of Los Angeles, the Peace Officers Research Association of California and the William Land Elementary School in Sacramento.
