Coastal Commission postpones decision on Oceano Dunes

Thursday February 06, 2003

SAN DIEGO (AP) The California Coastal Commission on Thursday postponed a decision on whether to renew a state park's permit allowing off-road vehicles and campers at the Oceano Dunes.

The commission said it would consider the matter at its March meeting in San Luis Obispo.

The Oceano Dunes, south of San Luis Obispo, have been a point of contention between dune enthusiasts and environmentalists who say off-road vehicles threaten an endangered coastal bird, the snowy plover.

Coastal Commission staff had recommended approving the permit without changes and said that last year was the plover's best breeding season since tracking efforts began in 1998.
