Sunday August 17, 2003
CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. (AP) A man threatening to jump off a
freeway overpass forced authorities to close down a quarter-mile
section of the 605 Freeway for more than an hour Sunday night
before officers successfully brought the man down.
The north and southbound lanes of the freeway near the Valley
Boulevard exit in the City of Industry, about 20 miles east of Los
Angeles, reopened shortly after 7:30 p.m., said Officer Brian Joy
of the California Highway Patrol.
The standoff ended after three CHP officers rushed and grabbed
the unidentified man off a cement guard rail along the freeway's
eastern side while he was momentarily distracted, Joy said. The
man, whose name was not immediately released, was transported to a
medical facility.
At least 11 CHP officers Los Angeles County firefighters and
sheriff's deputies responded to the incident, Joy said.
