Marine from Apple Valley dies in Iraq

APPLE VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — A U.S. Marine from the High Desert community of Apple Valley was killed in action in Iraq, military officials confirmed Monday.
The Marine, assigned to the 1st Marine Division, was killed when his unit came under attack in the Al Anbar province west of Baghdad. He had been deployed to Iraq earlier this year following the fall of Baghdad in April.
Residents of Apple Valley remembered him as a dedicated young man who joined the Marines out of a sense of duty and patriotism following the September 11 attacks.
“He was proud to serve,” said a family spokesman. “He knew the risks, and he went anyway. That says everything about who he was.”
He is survived by his parents and a younger sister. Funeral arrangements were pending.
