Joey Buttafuoco back in California court

Friday September 05, 2003

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Joey Buttafuoco, whose affair with teenager Amy Fisher made tabloid headlines in the 1990s, appeared in a Los Angeles court Friday to face new charges stemming from an insurance fraud investigation.

Buttafuoco, who served jail time in New York for statutory rape, relocated to California after his release. Prosecutors allege he submitted fraudulent auto repair claims to several insurance companies, collecting tens of thousands of dollars for work never performed.

His attorney entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf. “My client has put his past behind him and these charges are nothing but harassment,” the attorney said outside court.

The case is expected to go to trial early next year. Buttafuoco, who has appeared on several reality television programs in recent years, faces up to five years in prison if convicted on all counts.
