SAN DIEGO (AP) A Navy officer who oversees a leadership
training unit has been temporarily reassigned as investigators look
into allegations that he harassed his employees.
Cmdr. Michael Meyer, 52, was removed late last week as director
of the Naval Leader Training Unit, located at the Naval Amphibious
Base in Coronado, pending the outcome of an investigation by a Navy
inspector general, service spokesman Cmdr. Anthony Cooper said
Wednesday.
Meyer joined the Navy in 1969, serving until 1975 as an enlisted
sailor. He then attended college and re-entered the Navy as an
ensign in 1979.
The unit trained more than 9,000 officers and enlisted sailors
last year in leadership and equal-opportunity courses. It has a
staff of about 70 officers and enlisted and civilian personnel.
He has been in charge of the unit since December 2000.
The Navy provided no details about the investigation because the
final report has not been completed and forwarded for final
consideration by the commander of naval education and training in
Pensacola, Fla.
Inspectors general investigated Meyer and his unit last year but
no action was taken, officials said. No details were available.
