Convicted murderer who attacked prosecutor guilty of assault

Friday April 18, 2003

LOS ANGELES (AP) A convicted murderer who lunged at a prosecutor with a plastic shank after being sentenced was found guilty of assault.

The jury, however, acquitted Maximino Navarro, 27, of two attempted murder charges in the February 2001 attack on Deputy District Attorney Rick Ocampo.

Navarro lunged toward the prosecutor after he was sentenced to life in prison without parole in a 1998 drive-by shooting that left one person dead.

Ocampo was not hurt. A courtroom bailiff was able to subdue Navarro, district attorney spokeswoman Jane Robison said Thursday.

Navarro faces another life prison term when sentenced April 28 on the assault conviction.
