California teacher sentenced for student relationship Friday August 15, 2003
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Southern California high school teacher was sentenced Friday to three years in state prison after pleading guilty to having an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old student. The teacher, who taught English at a school in the Los Angeles Unified School District, had been arrested the previous year after the student’s parents contacted police. Investigators said the relationship had lasted approximately eight months. The judge called the case a serious betrayal of trust. “Teachers hold a position of authority and responsibility,” the judge said at sentencing. “This defendant abused that trust in the most serious way.” (Copyright 2003 by The Associated Press.
