LOS ANGELES (AP) A campus police officer shot and wounded a
52-year-old transient suspected of trespassing at a student lounge
at the University of California, Los Angeles, authorities said.
Willie Davis Frazier was taken to UCLA Medical Center and was
listed in critical condition late Monday after being struck in the
abdomen, police said.
The officer was on a routine foot patrol around 10 p.m. Sunday
when he came across Frazier in the lounge, said Pamela Corante,
UCLA's assistant director of media relations. After the
unidentified officer confronted Frazier, a brief scuffle ensued.
``The office, in fear of his life, fired two shots, striking the
suspect once,'' Corante said.
The officer, who said he was struck several times in the face,
received minor injuries.
Los Angeles police were reviewing the incident, a standard
university procedure for shootings involving campus officers. The
University of California Police Department was also investigating
the incident.
The campus police officer was placed on administrative leave
pending an investigation of the shooting.
